Platformers have been a staple of video games from almost the beginning of the medium. The genre also often serves as an introduction for new players when first picking up a controller, but are in turn just as capable of pleasing seasoned veterans, as well. Platformers are ever present, welcoming, and straightforward fun. Seeing a renaissance in recent years thanks to indie studios and big-time developers like Nintendo and Capcom, the platformer is as relevant today as it was twenty years ago.
Here’s a selection of the ten best platformers Nintendo consoles ever played host to. I’ll be focusing on 2D platformers this time around, and it’s also worth noting that I made a specific effort to pull from a variety of different titles and series. Let’s be frank, this list could have easily been filled with Mario and Metroid games exclusively if I didn’t do otherwise. So don’t wince if a beloved platformer isn’t on here!
I wouldn’t consider Muramasa a platformer. I think it’s more of a 2D hack and slash. Otherwise, great list. It’s good to see Tropical Freeze get some recognition.
