Earlier in the week, Joshua Johnston listed the best third party titles for each console. Unsurprisingly, Resident Evil 4 landed at number one for GameCube. The truth is, there are few Nintendo consoles where a game published and developed by Nintendo isn’t considered the best game available, but Resident Evil 4 just might be the exception to the rule. While Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker are considered two of the best games on GameCube, the conversation cannot even happen without mentioning Resident Evil 4. While the Resident Evil remake helped introduce new fans to the franchise, Resident Evil 4 redefined the series, and survival horror games in general. The game was eventually ported to PlayStation 2 and Wii, but Capcom’s critically lauded title will always be remembered as one of GameCube’s very best.

When it comes to lists like these, there are always great titles that have to be left out. I personally would have loved to include Spider-Man 2, NHL Hitz 2003, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Resident Evil Zero, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. The fact that we didn’t have room for any of those games, I think, is a testament to the quality of third party releases on GameCube. The console really did boast some of the most wonderful third party titles we’ve ever seen on Nintendo systems. One can only hope that Wii U can amass this type of list one day.
