5. Kafei and Anju

Anju and Kafei (in Keaton Mask)

Kafei and Anju are the couple in Majora’s Mask that Link has to reunite, but the extent to which you must go to reunite them could make a video game in itself. Anju and Kafei are engaged to be married, and promised to get hitched on the day of the Carnival of Time, exchanging the masks of the sun and the moon. Due to an unfortunate turn of events however, Kafei’s mask is stolen, and he is turned into a child. He runs away, and only Link can reunite the lovers.

He serves as messenger between the two, acting as courier, delivering tokens of their love, to prove that despite his absence, Kafei still very much loves Anju. After various item trading and a mission to retrieve his stolen mask, as well as stealing another one in the process, they are reunited, and exchange their vows. But…he is still a child at the time. It’s implied, though, that he was turned back into an adult, because in the end credits, we are given his point of view, and he is staring into Anju’s eyes. Even if he wasn’t re-adultified, though, and she was just holding him up to her eye-level, it’s just like that Tom Hanks film, Big, but in reverse, and we all know how heart-wrenching that romance was.
