SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie delves you into the world of Bikini Bottom and the newest plotline that pits our heroes against that forever scheming Plankton. Can you rescue Mr. Krabs and save the day? Should you even bother trying? Though frustrating at times, this movie-based platformer shows surprising promise.

visuals

The game is bright and colorful, portraying the range of hues you'd expect from the cartoon. The characters themselves could use a bit more smoothing out, but they still animate well. The cinema cut-scenes, however, are very disappointing. I was hoping for movie clips since this is, after all, a movie based title. What I got was some still scenes from the movie with voice-overs describing the events.

audio

The music within the game is put together well. The up-tempo rock beats keep you going and the character voices are done well. As with the series, the characters provide you with entertaining conversations and exclamations. You'll more than likely get a chuckle out of the entertaining quips and the sound effects of SpongeBob and Patrick running around and breaking everything.

gameplay

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie has turned out to be a fun little platformer. In your quest to defeat Plankton's plot in order to get the Krabby Patty formula, you'll be given a variety of obstacles, puzzles and mini-games to overcome. The controls can sometimes become frustrating as landing hits in combat or navigating the patty wagon along roads and ramps becomes difficult to accomplish.

You'll also be picking up "manliness points" along the way which you can use to upgrade your character's stats. This upgrades both the power and the visual effect for your attacks. This is often necessary in order to clear through a level. Quite frequently you'll need to upgrade in order to clear a level to in turn collect Goofy Goober Tokens. These allow you to unlock special abilities for even more areas. Although many of the mini-games feel as though they never end, they're still often enjoyable and worth the effort of completing.

overall

Even though the controls can get you yelling at the screen, the overall gameplay is quite enjoyable. The humor and fun mini-games reel you in, and the added bonuses of unlockable treats such as trailers and costumes keep you playing more. They made a good attempt at making an enjoyable platformer for SpongeBob fans which is always refreshing from the hordes of junk movie-title games.

final score 7.3/10
