Mega Man X: Command Mission

Fans of Mega Man unite in celebration this week with the release of Mega Man X: Command Mission on the Nintendo GameCube. However, it certainly isnít the side-scrolling glory that is Mega Man Anniversary Collection. Instead, itís a completely new beast; something that Blue Bomber fans havenít checked out before. Donít worry, though, you shouldnít expect anything as mediocre as Network Transmission. This is the turn-based role-playing game that we here at the Dojo have been following for quite some time. It still manages to capture the essence and character that has brought Mega Man to life these past sixteen years. However, in comparison to anything else out on the market today, Command Mission has a few hurdles to jump in order to ensnare the casual gamer.


The game takes on a very detailed cartoon-inspired design. X and the other characters are immediately recognizable and they all animate as they should. The character design is, in fact, very distinct. The new characters, especially the big bosses, all look strikingly memorable. The charm of the character within this game is deeply respected. For the most part, everything here looks good, but the environments could have used a little work. Compared to the amazing amount of attention paid to the characters, each area looks bland. However, there are a few stand-out paths early on in the game. Once those are out of the way, however, there isnít a whole lot to look at. Thankfully, the GameCube is able to bring out all of the brilliant colors found in this game. Overall, the game looks great for a role-playing game.


Fans of the Mega Man franchise can rejoice because all of the music and sound effects are authentic to the popular series. While most of the production isnít stripped from older games, they take a heavy inspiration from them. The music features rapid rhythms and memorable themes. The sound effects keep the battles intense and filled with action. Voice acting here is average and feels a bit forced sometimes, but each character holds the tone of the game well enough to get the job done.


Letís start out on the best note. The combat system is easily one of the most important features in any role-playing game. Itís especially important in games such as this where the amount of random battles verges on this side of ludicrous. Thankfully, the combat provides an enjoyable experience and the amount of battles cuts down on the time needed to level up your party. Once youíve reached an encounter, youíll have up to three friendly units available to you including X, Zero, Axl, or several new characters as well. The meter at the bottom of the screen details the attack queue as well as the health of each respective hero and enemy.

Giving commands to your available character is as easy as pushing a few buttons. Each character is equipped with a main weapon as well as two sub-weapons, along with weapon energy. In order to use sub-weapons, you must accumulate a specific amount of this energy, which regenerates on every turn. Once youíve stored enough of the energy, youíll be able to use an action trigger, which is a powerful attack unique to each character. Another interesting aspect of the battle system is the Hyper Mode, which is accessible to each character for a certain numbers of rounds. This special mode gives the character a distinct new look as well as more powerful stats. Itís especially good against bosses.

Speaking of which, the game is split into ten different chapters. At the end of each chapter, youíll fight a huge boss of some sort. For example, the first boss is a giant hippo with a shark rocket equipped on his back. How weird is that? Not weird enough, of course. The boss battles can be tricky and sometimes a bit difficult, but itís balanced nicely with the use of the interesting hyper mode as well as each characterís action trigger. What doesnít balance the game is the silly final strike. This attack is ridiculously hilarious. Once youíve lowered an enemyís hit points to the brink of death, youíll be able to activate the Final Strike, wherein all of your characters will bull-rush said enemy and pummel them with up to 20 times the normal damage output. Is it necessary? Not at all. Is it fun? Absolutely.

The plot provides an interesting amount of detail, enough to make it an interesting side-story within Xís universe. Without going into too many details, X is a Maverick Hunters hell bent on putting a stop to the Rebellion. The story is a little vague here and there, but thereís more than enough to actually call this game an RPG. Itís obviously much more complex than previous Mega Man games and definitely a lot more interesting than anything in the Battle Network series on the Game Boy Advance. Speaking of which, thereís a rather nifty GCN-GBA connectivity issue thatís, of course, exclusive to the GameCube version of the game. Once you acquire the Treasure Navi in the game, youíll be able to connect your Game Boy Advance turned Radar to your GameCube in order to unearth exclusive new items that canít be seen with the naked eye. Capcom definitely knows how to toy around with connectivity.




Mega Man X: Command Mission features some great play mechanics. As one of the few role-playing games available on the GameCube, fans of the genre may want to check this game out. Fans of the Blue Bomber himself obviously donít have a choice. This turn-based RPG is a great adaptation of the series, but as a stand-alone game it may have a hard time holding its own. As it stands, anyone looking for a great RPG or Mega Man title on the GameCube can look no further. In fact, if youíre looking for both youíd better fork over your cash right away.
