Crash: Mind Over Mutant

Crash, the lovable, cute and totally cool bandicoot makes yet another go at heroism in his newest adventure, Crash: Mind Over Mutant. In the DS version of this game, Crash foregoes the 3D realm in favor of the side-scrolling platformer. Crash also has a new ability which allows him to take over downed enemies. We enjoyed running around on the backs of Titans and using their abilities to get past areas that were otherwise impassable. Although the crew at Radical threw in some new ideas this time around, we felt that Crash: Mind Over Mutant feels just like all the other Crash titles out there on the shelves.


Although Crash: Mind Over Mutant features some great levels for players to explore, some features in the levels could definitely have been designed better. Some items, like the “next” arrow which indicates a new area, are at times almost impossible to see. Some enemies in the game seem just as hard to see, and at times it’s difficult to figure out what to collect, what to jump on or what is simply part of the background. In short, the game could have used some more polish.


The game music has changed very little since the very first Crash Bandicoot release and this Crash: Mind Over Mutant does not break that tradition. Fans of previous Crash music will feel right at home with this title, including the normal lot of xylophones, keyboards and flutes.


Controls for the game are pretty basic. Players push left to move left, and right to go right. Y has Crash throwing punches, B is to jump, and pressing B while in the air will make Crash jump again. Pressing Y while in the air will make Crash spin onto the heads of enemies, although spinning too much will cause Crash to get dizzy for a couple of seconds, rendering him vulnerable to attack. Pressing X, L or R while in the air will make mincemeat out of certain enemie courtesy of Crash's signature belly flop. Stronger enemies, however, cannot be hurt by this attack method. Defensively, players will press L or R to duck out of the way of attacks. The touch screen is used in limited fashion, primarily for equpping Titans and a few other tasks.

While Crash: Mind Over Mutant implements some great new ideas that stand out in the game -- namely, the ability to take over mutants and use their abilities -- the game suffers from lackluster controls which keep the title from being the type of comeback for the series it could have been. The issue with these controls is that the control sensitivity is inconsistent. Button pushes seem to be very touchy in some cases and in other cases button pushes aren’t even registered.

Crash: Mind Over Mutant is a standard platformer in every sense of the word. The game features puzzles galore and multi-level worlds for players to encounter. The real fun in the title, however, comes when Crash takes over Titans. Early on in the quest players will encounter a certain barrier that cannot be overcome without help. That’s where the Titans come in. When Crash defeats a Titan, he can leap on its back and use its abilities to overcome barriers. These mutants can also be stored in Crash’s pocket for use later in the levels.

The downside to being a platformer is that without a lot of great ideas that could vary the gameplay, the game gets extremely repetitive. Players who enjoy jumping around and defeating the same enemies for hours on end will appreciate this title, but we had a hard time staying entertained through the entire game.


Crash: Mind Over Mutant features local multiplayer abilities like Mutant battles where Players can go head-to-head locally fighting each other for Crash skill supremacy, and mini-games where players can play either alone or with friends locally. In the mini-Game "Crash Kaboom," Crash must grab bombs before the floor he’s standing on is destroyed by them. In "Give Them the Boot," crash must dodge and jump over barricades while kicking eggs which fly into a metal blimp that’s throwing balls of junk at Crash. The final Mini-game is "Rolling for Wumpa," where Crash stands on a round shell slamming into the ground to make the fruit Wumpa fall out of the trees to be collected while dodging falling enemies.


Crash: Mind Over Mutant is a game of mixed results. The gameplay of the adventure mode, for example, is large in scope, but is repetitive with boss battles that are nearly impossible without the use of Titans. The Titans, for their part, are lacking in variance; all of the Titans have similar attacks and are slow.

With its flaws, the game is far less entertaining than it could have been. If players are looking for a few fun Crash-based mini-games and a standard platformer with everything one would expect from a platformer, then the title may be something worth picking up. However, if players are looking for an epic platformer with a plethora of surprises and story twists, players may want to keep looking.
