Mission Impossible
Game players waiting for Mission: Impossible were expecting a James Bond hit like Rare's GoldenEye 007. What they got was unexpected: a great game, with a lot of potential that lacks in many ways. No multiplayer as well as other shortcomings make this game very short-lived.
visuals
The graphics for the most part are pretty decent. Some levels look really bad, such as the first level with all the fog. Other levels such as the Sewer (Sewage Control) look really nice and polished. Levels like the embassy look pretty nice as well, but fall short in representing the actual movie. The control doesn't feel as tight as it should and movement is often sluggish.
audio
The theme song is very well done, most of all. Other music rates from average to excellent. The piano player provides the music at the embassy. Weird thing is: once he's dead, where is the music coming from? Other than some occasional flaws (or rather preference in music), I think Mission: Impossible is a great example of what some people can do with music. The game also talks, too. Ethan says little phrases like "piece of cake" or "Ah, that's better". The sound is clear, most of the time- sometimes you don't know what the he is saying unless he says it over and over again. But I have no serious gripes with the music.
gameplay
Mission offers a lot of challenging missions and will keep the average gamer entertained for quite some time. Those who stay up all night to rush right through the game will find it less satisfying. Mission: Impossible is based on the movie, doing almost the same things as the actual movie but adding in things every here and there. While it doesn't actually represent the movie in most cases, it offers more challenge that way. I mean, if it was exactly like the movie, how much of a challenge would that be? Some of the levels are extremely fun to go through, such as the sniper level as well as the KGB HQ, where you first go to free Candice. Other levels fall short and are less interesting such as the security hallway and the warehouse as well as a few others. There are more interesting levels than non-interesting levels, but the gaps between the interesting ones make the game seem so dull. There are also a few parts of the actual gameplay I don't like. I realize that this is a spy game, but when you're running around shooting people, it should be to the death. Not "oops, too close, I'm under arrest now and I can't do anything about it" or "there's a truck coming. Maybe I should move… oh I can't. Have to start all over again." These annoying things that cause you to start over time after time are just completely annoying. The game should be more like "try and slap the cuffs on me if you want but I'm going to shoot you in the head if you even reach for them". The trial and error thing doesn't bother me so much, but the fact that I don't even stand a chance when a guard comes near me is downright annoying. My last gripe is the way the missions end if you do the slightest thing wrong. Let's say you kill a civilian on the train or while you're sniping at the train station. Or you feel the urge to shoot the lady in the red dress at the embassy. Your mission ends right there and then. Your mission is either automatically cut off or you are swarmed by guards and arrested. My question is, why? One of the greatest things about GoldenEye is that you have complete freedom over your actions. Sure it's not right to kill Dr Doak, but you know it's fun to do. While killing innocent people or shooting the person Sarah is talking to may not be right, it's a lot of fun to do and it gives gmes an interactive feeling- a feeling Mission: Impossible does not have. Everytime you think about shooting Dr. Doak while he sits there with his hands in the air, begging for mercy you thank him for the door decoder and blow his head off. And everytime you kill him, it's going to make you want to play that level again. Because you know it's fun to screw around with the innocent people in your games and it adds a lot of replay value. And replay value is not something that should be cut off.

overall
Mission: Impossible is an excellent attempt for Infogrames and I can't wait to see what they will come up with for the sequel. Since they get to start from scratch this time without the weight of rushing it through the door, I'm sure they will come up with something that corrects their previous mistakes as well as entertains like this one does. Do I regret buying Mission: Impossible? No, it has kept me entertained for a long time. I just hope the second one has a multiplayer and more freedom over your actions. Rent before you buy.
