Blast Corps
Blast Corps was one of the first games to land to the N64. I understand that the game is a little over two years old by now, but I didn't work here when it came out and I just had to review this game. The reason I am reviewing it is because I have recently rediscovered it and now that I think of it…why did I even let it collect so much dust? This game is awesome! I've now cleaned it off and find myself playing it more than any of my newer titles.
visuals
With their second N64 experience, Rare did an excellent job with the graphics. You are surrounded by huge environment arenas controlling a whole crap load of awesome looking machines. There is a lot of detail put into everything, except the little green guy controlling the machines. One of the few problems is a noticeable slow frame rate from time to time. But, the only time this happens is when a lot of objects are on the screen at one time. The camera angle is fairly decent, but having to turn it around all the time is quite annoying. The explosions are excellent as well, with a lot of detail. When the nuclear blast goes off, the whole screen is filled with explosion and the city around explodes into nothing but rubble. In a word: amazing.
audio
The master's of music have equipped the most destructive game with some awesome tunes and sound effects. It's really good music and there's a lot of it too. The explosion sounds are also very loud and realistic as well. And then you have a nightmare in the sound department… the lady. I don't remember her name but you know who she is. The "try something else" lady. I voted for her for "most annoying" in the player choice awards. There's nothing worse than a nag telling you what to do when you're trying to do your job… not like she's out there doing anything. Why doesn't she grab a J-bomb and help instead of nagging me? But, overall decent music except for… her.
gameplay
You control the little green man, who is set off to save the world from a nuclear reactor on wheels from setting off. It's set in a straight path and is not stopping. If the slightest impact occurs, the world is doomed. Funny how they just didn't pump all the gas out…but what would be the fun of that? Instead, you have the task of destroying everything in site using your huge arsenal of vehicles. You've got your heavy destruction ones such as a Bulldozer, J-bomb and other heavily armed human suits that fly, roll, and pack a powerful punch to anything it touches. You've also got your "powerful but I'd prefer the J-bomb instead" arsenal: The missile launcher on a bike, a small mini-car with a jet pack on the end, and a vehicle that packs 2 powerful rams on each side. And then you've got your weak arsenal to challenge your skills: the dump truck, a police car, and two hot rods. There are even mini games for racing around tracks to get the best time and to practice with each vehicle to help you maintain a certain feel. To add to the fun and challenge, only certain vehicles are set in certain levels. Rare even took the honor of speeding the nuclear missile up from time to time just to simply piss you off. Once that's over, the fun doesn't stop…why not destroy everything else? To earn a second gold medal on each stage, simply destroy everything in site, collect all of the RDUs and free all hostages. Sounds fun? It is. Memory Pack Note: The memory pak lets you save your own personal game to play over and over. Best of all, there's no annoying save points or check points. It saves itself after a level is completed, hands free. The game also supports EEPROM for one game. That game is on there for life and cannot be deleted... at least not that I know of.

overall
This game quite simply kicks ass and an instant classic in my book. When I first laid hands on this game, I could not stand to play it. After I played it for a long time, I was hooked on it. This game is what kept me busy for months, and if not for Rare and Blast Corps I wouldn't own a Nintendo 64 anymore. This game is awesome not to mention extremely addictive and if you haven't bought it, get it. My only hope is Rare is thinking of Blast Corps 2 right about now. I could use another long game... and hopefully multiplayer.
