Army Men Advance
Since 3DO released the first Army Men game on PC and Playstation, the series has sold millions, quickly taking off to become one of the most recognizable franchises in the current generation of console gaming. With titles ranging from Sarge's Heroes to Air Attack found on nearly every console out there, 3DO took no time in bringing an all new adventure for the bite-sized heroes on Nintendo's latest handheld.
visuals
Sadly, this is one of the game's downfalls. The graphics in Army Men are extremely cartoony and far more reminisce of the Worms series than any of the console Army Men games. With tiny characters featuring oversized heads and backgrounds which sport colorful and crudely drawn everyday environments...you can't help but ignore the kiddiness which is apparent in this title.
audio
The audio is actully pretty good. Each weapon has digitized sound clips which sound crisp and clear, and fit each shot rather well. Voice is rare, but it's clear and very similar to what you'd hear in other Army Men titles.
gameplay
Army Men has always been one of those "like it or hate it" titles. I happen to like the series, due to the novel concept of replaying one of my favorite pasttimes as a child on a video screen. And despite its kiddy look, Army Men Advance is no walk in the park. The AI for the enemies is superb, making the game quite difficult to progress through. Though there is somewhat of a storyline involved, the objective-based missions keep the otherwise mindless killing from dragging on. One of the dissapointments I have found, however, is that the game utilizes password backup system...rather than battery backup, which can be extremely annoying.
multiplayer
See above.
overall
Overall though, this game is surprisingly fun. It's an excellent game to keep you occupied on the go. Any fan of the Army Men series is sure to go crazy over this pocket sized version of the bite-sized miniatures. Hoo-RAH
