Nintendo Puzzle Collection

The classics never die. Nintendo's three biggest puzzle games are all set for a big revival on the GameCube and GameBoy Advance. Nathan's got impressions from the E3 show floor.

Hands-on Impressions
By Nathan Heckel

Already having been released in Japan this spring, Nintendo Puzzle Collection will now be coming to the States. In its playable form here at E3, all three games – Dr. Mario, Yoshi’s Cookie, and Panel de Pon – were available. Essentially, these are all pixel-for-pixel ports of Panel de Pon and Yoshi’s Cookie for Super NES as well as Dr. Mario 64. I did learn, however, that due to the cutesy nature of Panel de Pon’s graphics, it’ll instead be Tetris Attack that receives a port on the GameCube. Not demonstrated was the GBA downloading of each game in NES form.

Word on the Street
Good puzzlers are severly lacking on the GameCube, and this game offers three in one. Repackaging old classics may seem like a simple cash-in move on Nintendo's part, but packing in free GameBoy Advance games to download certainly sweetens the deal. Here's hoping some more developers start catching on to this idea.

From the Horse's Mouth

  • Clear lines and line up blocks of different colors and fast-dropping capsules in this collection of three of the best puzzle games ever created: Dr. Mario, Yoshi's Cookie and Tetris Attack.
  • Discover multiplayer mayhem, as all three games now include four-player options. Other new modes and characters have also been included, offering more game-play variety than ever before.
  • Plug in your GameBoy Advance and use it as a controller, or transfer your favorite game to it and play it on the go!
