Donald Duck Goin' Quackers

Oh the fond memories of Disney days gone past. Honestly, I canít remember playing a Disney game since the days of the NES. Duck Tales, Chip and Daleís Rescue Rangers were some of my favorite games back then, and still are, but that was because they were actually good titles, not just a recognizable name slapped onto rehash-ville. Sadly, having played the PS2 version of Donald Duck Goiní Quackers , this is far from an inspired title. The ports are across the board, so when this title finally hits the GCN donít expect much more than a couple graphical enhancements, if even that.

Impressions
The story is simple, rescue the kidnapped girlfriend! The stages follow a basic level pattern with few exceptions. Run away from the screen down a linear path Crash Bandicoot style in the first area. Switch to a side scrolling stage, then sprint towards the screen while being chased by a magic hand. Again, nothing that hasnít been seen before. Finally, fight the area boss. Lather, rinse, and repeat until the game ends. Again, this is based off of the already available PS2 version, but donít be surprised to see the same decent controls and so-so hit detection, AI on par with SNES games, and not much else when it appears on GCN. Most likely it will take under 4 hours for even novice gamers to complete. Itís short, which probably isnít a bad thing when your cut scenes involve Huey, Dewy, and Louie calling you ďspecialĒ and Gladstone keeps finding nickels.
Word on the Street
Itís pretty silent out there thus far on this game. Most likely because anyone who is really after this title already owns a version on another system. Even Disney doesnít appear to be doing much to promote the GCN port which will drop on March 19. The tumbleweeds are blowing by like an old western in anticipation...
From the Horses Mouth
  • Donald runs amuck, goes berserk, and gets hyper in this hilarious quest to rescue Daisy.
  • Favorite characters: Huey, Dewey, Louie, the Beagle Boys, Gyro Gearloose, Daisy and more.
  • Control Donaldís explosive temper, confront wacky characters and obstacles.
  • Itís non-stop action as Donald runs, jumps, dodges and quacks his way to save Daisy!
  • Rated: E
Conclusion
If the GCN version is anything like the other ports, which I expect, then itís a rental. There is some replay value, after you finish the game you are allowed to go back to earlier stages and find hidden secrets and earn new moves. However, it seems almost thrown in as an afterthought and getting that 100% rating just doesnít seem important. There is an enjoyment factor there, but itís reserved for Disney fans and younger gamers. And even among them, I donít think anyone will be ďGoiní QuackersĒ over this game for long.
