impressions

Ping Pals is an instant messaging game that takes PictoChat to the next level. Youíre still able to chat with up to 15 other friends with type or pictures, but thereís been a whole new twist added to it. In Ping Pals youíll be able to customize your very own Ping Pal, an avatar that is displayed to the left of the conversation. By earning points from certain mini-games you are able to purchase around 2,000 different items consisting of hats, outfits, accessories and more. But playing mini-games isnít the only way to get these items. You can sell the ones you have to friends and in turn buy things from them. You can even earn points by chatting.

Ping Pals will take advantage of the DSís downloading capabilities so up to 16 people can play while using only a single cartridge. Each game has its own set of only 300 items (different from every elseís) so if you feel like collecting them all youíll have to trade with at least 6 other people. The game will also take advantage of the DSís built in clock enabling you to acquire certain items on certain days of the week or even at particular times during the day, a lot like in the Pokemon games for the GameBoy Color.

Graphically the game looks pretty colorful. With your own little Ping Pal displayed on screen along with the discussion itself. Each Pal looks bright and cheery and gives the game an overall goofy feeling that lots of us know and love. This should be a fun title to play with.

word on the street

Ping Pals takes advantage of the touch screen allowing you the chance to draw pictures and send them off for up to 15 friends to see. You and your 15 friends will all be able to join into some of the fun thanks to the single-cartridge 16 player download. By trading and selling items with your friends, you can try to find and collect all 2,000 or so items, some of which can only be obtained at particular times of the day or even week!

press release notes

  • Trade and sell items with your friends in order to get as many Ping Pal accessories as you can
  • Earn points to buy new items by playing mini-games and chatting with your friends

overall

In short, Ping Pals is a big step up from PictoChat and Iím sure others will follow in its wake. With some funny looking characters and thousands of different items to trip out your Pal, there should be something for everyone. Save points, by more things, wait for the right time, get some more things, trade with your buddies, and get even more things, Ping Pals is a collectors fantasy.
