bit Generations: Soundvoyager

For a game using sound as a primary indicator, GBA's monaural speaker can provide only volume cues. Background patterns light up with shapes when sounds occur and a sound wave gauge at the top of the screen indicates strength, but neither of these give the player any indication of whether the sound is to the left or right...

Solution? Players plug in headphones and stereo sound swoops in to save the day!

Sound Catch Sound Drive

Soundvoyager contains seven game modes centered around the idea of locating things by sound: Sound Catcher, Sound Drive, Sound Chase, Sound Cock, Sound Slalom, Sound Cannon and Sound Picker. All sounds are initially visible for a time, and then gradually disappear to be located aurally.

Sound Catcher and Sound Slalom are similar in that players advance automatically on a field toward sound goals. In Sound Catcher players do just that, moving left and right to try and rendezvous with incoming sounds. Sound Slalom is slightly more challenging. As the name implies, players must navigate between two sound gates, similarly advancing automatically.

Sound Drive has players driving along a five lane highway, avoiding cars by sound. Sound Chase is like Sound Drive, but with an additional sound to catch while weaving through traffic.

Sound Cock and Sound Picker have players moving within a bounded box to try and locate sounds, the former a rooster and the latter various other sounds. In Sound Cannon sounds advance on your location in a 360 degree field to be taken out sniper style. You only have a limited number of shots, so make 'em count!

Don't read any Japanese? Not a problem. You won't be able to read the instruction manual, but you likely won't have to. The premises here are extremely basic, and a little trial and error will reveal specific button controls. As with all games in the bit Generations series, what minimal text exists by way of main titles and headings is all in English with numbers in familiar Arabic style.

The bit Generations software experiment by Nintendo is looking to reveal the roots of fun gameplay through simple, accessible design. All games in the series are retro-hip with little to no Japanese in them; yet they won't officially reach western shores for months to come, if at all. Intrigued? Why wait? Import!
