bit Generations: Dialhex

The main game board is a giant hexagon into which triangular pieces of different colors fall at random. Once the board is filled up the game is over. Players control a dial that rotates groups of pieces, positioned with the D-Pad and rotated with L and R. Three different effects involving the creation of uniformly colored hexagons advance the game.

Creating a hexagon of the color highlighted in your gauge will fill up the gauge one. Do this six times to move on to a new color. Creating a hexagon with a flashing dark piece rips a void in the board straight down, spilling out pieces and freeing up the board with more breathing room. Creating a hexagon with a flashing light piece removes all pieces of that color from the board, creating an avalanche that forms hexagons of the remaining colors.

Tinkling sound effects add to the impression of an austere, geometric stained glass window. Rotating pieces in a dial is more challenging than first appears; players must think radially as opposed to simply swapping two pieces' positions laterally.

Dialhex is comprised of three game modes: Solo, Endless and VS. Solo utilizes the hexagon gauges of different colors, while Endless keeps score of how many hexagons you can form before game over. VS mode pits you against another GBA player wirelessly. In VS mode each player appears to play against the other on opposite sides of the board, with onscreen indicators of enemy dial position and progress.

Don't read any Japanese? Not a problem. You won't be able to read the instruction manual, but you likely won't have to. The premises here are extremely basic, and a little trial and error will reveal specific button controls. As with all games in the bit Generations series, what minimal text exists by way of main titles and headings is all in English with numbers in familiar Arabic style.

The bit Generations software experiment by Nintendo is looking to reveal the roots of fun gameplay through simple, accessible design. All games in the series are retro-hip with little to no Japanese in them; yet they won't officially reach western shores for months to come, if at all. Intrigued? Why wait? Import!
