Producers Dish Info On Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Aaron Roberts 10/30/2006, 5:42pm Eastern Time

New details on Square-Enix's DS title Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings have surfaced.

Japan's Dengeki DS Style recently interviewed Motumo Toriyama and Eisuke Yokoyama, and the two offered up some previously-unknown information about the game. Revenant Wings will take place after Final Fantasy XII, meaning that those who've played the original game can see what happens to some of the characters after the original story is finished.

The battle system is loosely based on Final Fantasy XII, but has been simplified and tweaked quite a bit. In fact, it has more new mechanics than old, but some familiar elements have been kept so fans of the original game won't be confused. The main game will reportedly be fully playable with the DS stylus, as well. Characters Vaan, Fran, and Balthier from Final Fantasy XII have been confirmed as playable, and there are several other playable characters as well, reportedly more in Revenant Wings than in Final Fantasy XII.

Summons will be more important in Revenant Wings than in any other Final Fantasy title, according to the producers. In addition to seeing more summon monsters appear than in any other game in the series, the summons will also be the key to winning many battles.

Toriyama says he plans to use both DS screens for battles as well as for any other aspects of gameplay, and that the development team is considering making the game Wi-Fi compatible, as the battle system lends itself to two-player competition very easily, although he adds that lag issues will have to be dealt with if the game is to be playable online.

No screenshots of the game or official ship date have been released, but DS and Final Fantasy fans will surely be holding their collective breath for more on this one.
